William Wilson Jr., DDS, MS

William Wilson Jr., DDS, MS

Doctor Wilson's dental career started in 1989 as an enlisted Dental Assistant and Dental Laboratory Technician in the US Navy. He was commissioned as a US Navy Dental Officer in 1996, and enrolled as a student at the West Virginia University School of Dentistry on a full scholarship offered to him from the Navy.

In May of 2000 he was awarded the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the West Virginia University School of Dentistry in Morgantown, WV. Following graduation from dental school, Dr. Wilson completed a one year Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at Parris Island, SC. He went on to earn a Masters of Science degree in Oral Biology with a concentration in Prosthodontics from The George Washington University,  Washington, D.C. and completed a 3 year Prosthodontic residency as well as an additional one year fellowship in Maxillofacial Prosthetics at the world renowned Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, MD.

His experience in the Navy has afforded him the opportunity to provide some of the most complex dental reconstructions to some of the world's most deserving patients.  Prior to his retirement from the Navy, he served as the Department Chairman and Program Director for Maxillofacial Prosthetics at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School, while also serving as a consultant to the Navy Surgeon General for Maxillofacial Prosthetics and Dental Implants. Dr. Wilson currently serves as a consultant for the Naval Postgraduate Dental School.

Dr. Wilson is a board certified prosthodontist and diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics.   He has achieved the membership category level of "Fellow" in both the American College of Prosthodontists and the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics.  He is currently serving as the President-Elect for the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics and serves as the Maxillofacial Prosthetics Representative for the American College of Prosthodontists Council to the American Board of Prosthodontics.  He maintains membership in the American Dental Association, Virginia Dental Association, and Northern Virginia Dental Society.  He serves a reviewer for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry and has been appointed as a Consultant Site Visitor for the Commission on Dental Accreditation for Advanced Prosthodontic Education and Maxillofacial Prosthetics.

Dr. Wilson has been a professional lecturer at both local study groups and national meetings.   In 2014 he was honored to be awarded the prestigious Major General Bill Lefler, Federal Services Award at the American College of Prosthodontists Annual Session.

“I love the work we do at NOVA Prosthodontics and the personalized results we create in partnership with our patients. Nothing is more rewarding than the reactions we see when something is returned that had previously been lost...for us it is often their smile and a return of confidence. ” - Dr. William Wilson, Jr.

We know “prosthodontics” is a mouthful; it’s a big word that describes the dental specialty that pertains to dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, crowns, bridges, and dentures. It is the recognized dental specialty of esthetics, prosthetics, and reconstruction.

We are your tooth and smile architects; we create, design, and implement dental solutions to relieve pain, close gaps, restore teeth, and boost confidence.

Prosthodontists are recognized dental specialists that have three years of additional advanced and intensive training beyond the four years of  dental school to perfect the art of restorative, cosmetic, and functional dentistry. This advanced training gives them the knowledge and skills to treat the most complex cases, whether it is refining a single tooth or reconstructing an entire mouth.

Additionally, prosthodontists are skilled at taking the entire mouth into consideration when planning treatment; we are specifically trained to focus on the smallest details in order to extend the lifespan of restorations and reduce early (and expensive!) failure of crowns, veneers, and implants. The goal is always to create harmony between form and function; we focus not only on beautiful smiles, but also how the teeth affect bite, speech, eating, and overall health and wellness.

At NOVA Prosthodontics, we couple our training and experience with the latest technology to shorten your treatment duration, lengthen the time between visits, and maximize your results.

We believe the world is a better place when people smile their true, authentic smiles. That’s exactly why we’re here — and why we look forward to helping you find yours.

Teeth are not one-size-fits-all, and neither are the treatments for restoring and replacing them, which is why we at NOVA Prosthodontics take such time and care with each patient. With many different treatment options the choice is not always clear, but we are a clear choice for your prosthodontic treatment needs; all of our experience and services are tailored toward providing dental solutions that last, function beautifully, and give you a smile you are happy to share. We believe the most important choice is the decision you ultimately make and the doctor you choose for your treatment.

You’ve come to the right place. Now let’s find you the right treatment.

    Tooth Restoration

We give you many choices, and we’ll help you choose the right one for you.

Teeth wear and break for a number of reasons, and our tooth restoration services give you back the smile you once had–or always wanted.

In addition to our implants, dentures, and cosmetic dentistry, our tooth restoration services include dental veneers and crowns. Each serves a slightly different purpose, and each serves to restore the look and functionality of your teeth. When treatment is complete, your teeth won’t be the only things restored; your confidence will be, too.

    Cosmetic Dentistry

For beautiful smiles that look as good as they feel and function.

To be clear, cosmetic dentistry is not a recognized dental specialty recognized by the American Dental Association.   “Cosmetic dentists” do not undergo advanced specialty training like prosthodontists do.   Some will take a few weekend courses for continuing education and then call themselves “Cosmetic Dentist”.   In fact, most, if not all, dentists perform some cosmetic dentistry procedures in their offices–tooth whitening, bonding, veneers, crowns, bridges, and cosmetic gum surgery, to name a few.

Dentures may be artificial teeth, but there is nothing artificial about how we make them at NOVA Prosthodontics. It’s more than taking an impression. It’s about making one.

Dr. Wilson, Dr. Mahler and Dr. Eskow believe in the lost art of denture design and fabrication, and they take the time to create prosthetic teeth that are customized to you. As recognized experts in denture aesthetics and function, we use our advanced skills, education, and experience to bring you the best possible outcome.

    Dental Implants

Bite into the good life with strong, secure dental implants.

Dental implants are metal posts or frames that are surgically placed beneath the gums and secured to the jawbone. Dental implants help secure bridges, dentures and artificial teeth; since they are fused to your jaw, they won’t slip and shift in your mouth while you eat, drink, talk and laugh.

    On-Site Laboratory

    Comprehensive exams. Comprehensive results.

With our in-house laboratory, we believe the best smiles come to those who shouldn’t have to wait.

Our specialty involves the identification, diagnosis and treatment of complex dental conditions, and we believe it is essential to have a dental laboratory on-site that handles both fixed and removable tooth restorations and protheses. This also allows us to create precise restorations of dental implants and also perform same-day repairs of removable dentures on site helping you get back to your life faster.

    Maxillofacial Prosthetics

Prosthodontists complete an additional year of advanced training to help patients with facial and jaw prosthetics. Their specialty includes the creation of prosthetic eyes, ears, noses, and other missing facial and jaw structures lost to cancer, trauma, or genetics

Dr. Mahler was ‘highly recommended’ to me 25 years ago and he has always lived up to that reputation. He’s a Very Reliable and SKILLFUL Dentist who specializes in Prosthodontics, supported by a very friendly and nice office staff and dental associates. I haven’t always been the best at caring for my teeth and gums, but Dr. Mahler and his associates has helped me get through some very painful and difficult situations, and now my teeth and gums are in the best condition of my life, thanks primarily to his hygienist, Shirley, who’s been cleaning and advising me for about 5 years now.

Normally I go to Dr. Eskow, but she was off on maternity leave. I was a bit skeptical about seeing another Dentist in the practice I didn’t know, but my experience with Dr. Wilson was equally as great. Instead of crowning a tooth that did not need repair, he determined my tooth pain was caused by nerve pain from clenching my teeth. Very impressed that he knew of trigger points … and thankful that he didn’t take my money for something that was not caused by decay. Thank you NOVA Prosthodontics for your professionalism again.

I have visited Dr. Eskow on several occasions and have been very pleased every time! I’m particular and like to go to specialists because I’ve noticed that I get better care and expertise that way. (Plus, in this case, the cost is the same as a dentist.)
