William Wilson Jr., DDS, MS

William Wilson Jr., DDS, MS

Doctor Wilson's dental career started in 1989 as an enlisted Dental Assistant and Dental Laboratory Technician in the US Navy. He was commissioned as a US Navy Dental Officer in 1996, and enrolled as a student at the West Virginia University School of Dentistry on a full scholarship offered to him from the Navy.

In May of 2000 he was awarded the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the West Virginia University School of Dentistry in Morgantown, WV. Following graduation from dental school, Dr. Wilson completed a one year Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at Parris Island, SC. He went on to earn a Masters of Science degree in Oral Biology with a concentration in Prosthodontics from The George Washington University,  Washington, D.C. and completed a 3 year Prosthodontic residency as well as an additional one year fellowship in Maxillofacial Prosthetics at the world renowned Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, MD.

His experience in the Navy has afforded him the opportunity to provide some of the most complex dental reconstructions to some of the world's most deserving patients.  Prior to his retirement from the Navy, he served as the Department Chairman and Program Director for Maxillofacial Prosthetics at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School, while also serving as a consultant to the Navy Surgeon General for Maxillofacial Prosthetics and Dental Implants. Dr. Wilson currently serves as a consultant for the Naval Postgraduate Dental School.

Dr. Wilson is a board certified prosthodontist and diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics.   He has achieved the membership category level of "Fellow" in both the American College of Prosthodontists and the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics.  He is currently the President of the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics and serves as the Maxillofacial Prosthetics Representative for the American College of Prosthodontists Council to the American Board of Prosthodontics.  He maintains membership in the American Dental Association, Virginia Dental Association, and Northern Virginia Dental Society.  He serves a reviewer for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry and has been appointed as a Consultant Site Visitor for the Commission on Dental Accreditation for Advanced Prosthodontic Education and Maxillofacial Prosthetics.

Dr. Wilson has been a professional lecturer at both local study groups and national meetings.   In 2014 he was honored to be awarded the prestigious Major General Bill Lefler, Federal Services Award at the American College of Prosthodontists Annual Session.

Brian A. Mahler, DDS

Dr. Mahler is no longer seeing patients at NOVA Prosthodontics, but remains on staff as a clinical consultant.

Dr. Mahler received his D.D.S from the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry. After graduation from dental school, he completed a one-year general practice residency at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, which included additional training in all aspects of dentistry. Dr. Mahler next completed a two year specialty program at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia where he received his certificate in Fixed Prosthodontics.

He has maintained a private practice limited to prosthodontics in Fairfax, Virginia, for over 30 years.  He has lectured both nationally and internationally on various topics involving dentistry and consulted for numerous dental implant companies.

He is a member of the American College of Prosthodontics, American Dental Association, Virginia Dental Association, Northern Virginia Dental Society and the Academy of Osseointegration.

Dr. Mahler has been routinely named as a top prosthodontist in the Washingtonian Magazine, Northern Virginia Magazine, Virginia Living, and Consumer Checkbook.

    HOW IS A PROSTHODONTIST DIFFERENT THAN A GENERAL DENTIST?

    Prosthodontists are recognized dental specialists that have three years of additional advanced and intensive training beyond the four years of  dental school to perfect the art of restorative, cosmetic, and functional dentistry. This advanced training gives them the knowledge and skills to treat the most complex cases, whether it is refining a single tooth or reconstructing an entire mouth.

    Additionally, prosthodontists are skilled at taking the entire mouth into consideration when planning treatment; we are specifically trained to focus on the smallest details in order to extend the lifespan of restorations and reduce early (and expensive!) failure of crowns, veneers, and implants.     Cosmetic Dentistry

    For beautiful smiles that look as good as they feel and function.

    To be clear, cosmetic dentistry is not a recognized dental specialty recognized by the American Dental Association.   “Cosmetic dentists” do not undergo advanced specialty training like prosthodontists do.   Some will take a few weekend courses for continuing education and then call themselves “Cosmetic Dentist”.   In fact, most, if not all, dentists perform some cosmetic dentistry procedures in their offices–tooth whitening, bonding, veneers, crowns, bridges, and cosmetic gum surgery, to name a few.

    It is truly a pleasure to express my gratitude to Dr Wilson and his team. I had had a horrible two-year experience with an incompetent cosmetic dentist and negligent oral surgeon (recommended by the cosmetic dentist) for a full-mouth implant procedure. It all went badly, but after the implant process was finally completed, I was at least looking forward to having my final teeth. But they couldn’t do that either. The prostheses didn’t fit well and each try-in took hours and was very painful, as the technician didn’t have the experience and skill to take the temporaries on and off. I finally bailed and went to Dr. Wilson, and I so much wish I’d done that earlier. Using the best full-mouth scanning equipment, he and his lab made me a set of great fitting teeth. He did one set of temporaries and got them perfect before doing the finals. Getting them on and off didn’t hurt at all because he knows what he’s doing. I am happy and so glad I didn’t give up and settle for something that would never have been right. Thank you Dr. Wilson!
